Mario Cipollini: "PALMARES! «
Memories of Paris-Nice in the 95's
After the finish of a stage in Paris Nice, like all bike-loving children of my age, I tried to see, follow and accompany our idols.
I was also able to witness a scene that will remain engraved in my mind: Beau Mario or the great sprinter Mario Cippolini returning to his sports director's car.
When he arrives at his car, the passenger seat next to the driver is occupied by one of his teammates; Cipollini calls out to his fellow countryman, pointing at him and says a dry word: "PALMARES! «
His team-mate gets up immediately and gives way to him.
From that day on, when I hear the prize list, I remember that moment in my youth that certainly contributed to generate my passion for cycling.
His track record speaks for itself:
2002 Road World Champion
Italian road champion in 1996
57 Grand Tour stage victories: 42 Giro stages, 12 Tour stages and 3 Vuelta stages.
8 stage victories in Paris-Nice
Gent-Wevelgen 1992, 1993 and 2002
Milan San Remo 2002
His word "Palmarès" made me understand the status he gave to the runner.
